Rebel Pen

Dear Reader,

With great pride, we present to you the 2011 edition of the Rebel Pen.  We are especially proud of the progress we have made from the beginning of the year.  Unlike in past years, we start with a completely new slate.  This year, we’d like to welcome our new advisors Ms. Kuhn and Mrs. Marr.  Although we miss Mr. Golden, they have proven to be exceptional leaders.  Time and time again, they have shown us how much the Rebel Pen means to them.

It is a tradition for Rebel Pen to have a theme—usually encompassing four sections.  In the past, the theme was decided at the end of the year.  This year, we’ve decided to choose the theme at the beginning.  One thing that didn’t change, though, was the overwhelming ideas for the theme.  In the end, we settled on card suits.  It is general knowledge that the four suits are hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades.  What is not general knowledge is what each of these suits represents.  Using our imagination and research, we have decided that the hearts would represent love, the clubs would represent creativity and the imagination, spades would represent the power of knowledge, and diamonds would represent growth and development.

We would also like to thank all of the writers, artists and editors who have contributed to the Rebel Pen.  Together, we managed to slay a dragon, find some buried treasure, and, oh, create the Rebel Pen.  We are confident that our successors will do an excellent job in keeping the spirit of the Rebel Pen alive.  We’d like to wish them good luck in the following years.

Your peers have incredible talent.  This issue is proof of it.

We hope you enjoy what they have to  offer.

Sincerely,
Christine A.      Serena S.      Isabel O.

Dear Reader,

The Rebel Pen literary and art magazine has always been a beautiful showcase of work created by our very talented students here at South Middle.  Mr. Michael Golden, who retired last year, dedicated many years as an inspiring and nurturing advisor.  His shoes are definitely hard to fill, but we are grateful to be the new advisors of the Rebel Pen.  The excellence of this year’s issue is due in part to the amazing legacy that Mr. Golden left behind.

Our dedicated staff is headed by our three Editors-in-Chief:  the talented Serena S., the dedicated Isabel O. and the intelligent Christine A.  These ladies helped us find our footing as we took over the reigns from Mr. Golden.  They helped merge ways of the past with our ways of taking the magazine in a new direction.  Their editing, mentoring, managerial and writing skills are evident by how well every piece turned out.  Our Art Directors, Helena W. and Emma L., are equally amazing.  Their talents are on display throughout this edition, not only shown in what they created, but in their careful placement of pieces throughout the magazine.  Our members worked tirelessly on creating all of the written and drawn pieces presented in this edition.  Every student listed on the masthead helped to make this issue a true masterpiece.  We feel honored to have spent this past year with each and every one of them.

We are thrilled with how this edition turned out. We are so thankful to all of our staff for all of their hard work and devotion. We feel equally devoted to the Rebel Pen, and we are excited to see what the years will bring as advisors of this fantastic literary magazine.  We would be remiss not to thank Dr. Welsch, Dr. Cartolano, and Mr. Cozine, teachers in the English and Art departments, and Larry at Phipps Central Printing. This beautiful magazine would not have been possible without their help.

It is with great pleasure that we present the 2011 edition of the Rebel Pen. We invite you to please visit our website that was designed with great care by Joshua G. and Samuel G.: http://rebelpen11.weebly.com/index.html. We also always welcome new members and hope to see more new faces next year.

Best,
Ms. Kirsten Kuhn and Mrs. Nicolette Marr
